"There is… pic.twitter.com/l08dpwlicf
"There is tremendous interest on the part of the people who own the rights, being the Walt Disney Company, to do something for the 20th anniversary of High School Musical that would come out and it will be contingent on a certain cast member being interested in doing that, you know, because everything's more would be more expensive. But we've had discussions. People are willing to get roll up their sleeves and do it if all the pieces can come together. We the people created the movie, didn't do the TV show version of High School Musical. You know, that was a different entity. And though we had all the taste of that, but it was different entity. But if we do High School 4 it's going to be we're going to get the band back together and and do the thing we have. We have an idea for what it would be. It's kind of cool. It's not just a victory lap or you know, because we wouldn't want to piss people off who said, "Oh my God, I invested my childhood in these 3 movies and now they did this". So we don't want to do that. But so we're on the case. We'll see if it happens."In May 2016, Disney started to cast High School Musical 4 with an event including Corbin Bleu doing an open audition for more than 5000 people. The project was closed and then in 2019, HIgh School Musical: The Musical: The Series premiered on Disney+ with the idea of keeping the franchise name alive and bringing a new generation to the Wildcats world, as mentioned by Peter, HSMTMTS is not property of the same people that worked on the films so there's still a hope on having another chapter to the franchise on the near future.

One big, big memory, there's so many of them, but we were filming High School Musical 1 and we were filming the finale "We're All In This Together" and we had all of this cameras going, the cast and the dancers and I looked in to the gymnasium and said, "Man if Disney does the job we're doing here this is gonna reach a lot of people", and I took the cast and put them in a circle and said, "Get ready, I think your lives are gonna change". [...] Just had this premonition, this feeling that we're up to something that was gonna matter. You can watch his interview below on @archive_hsm

The inspirations for the musical sequence from Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) and Ryan Evans (Lucas Grabeel) dates back from 1933.
On interviews for promotion of High School Musical 3, Kenny Ortega talked about the movies, musical directors and scenes where he took inspiration from Bob Fosse's Chicago, Chorus Line and Busby Berkeley's 42nd Street. Some elements from this film are also hidden in the background as some easter eggs. See bellow some of the side-by-side comparisons.

This issue was created with the date of April 16, 2007, same year of shooting High School Musical 2, although the photo used in this was from mockup photographs from 2005, time period when High School Musical started production.
The subtitle of the picture is the only part visible of the text in this rare photo from the newspaper prop that reads "Sharpay Evans wows the audience with her dazzling performance in this year's Spring Musical. Record breaking tickets sales helped to make it the most successful drama production in East High history."
